How Notices works

verified Checked 2026-08-18

Notices is for the things that only matter for a short time, like a garage sale or a found dog or word that the water is off. The Record is the other half of the site and it holds the answers that stay true.

Every notice has a type

Every notice is filed under one of eight types and the type sets how long it stays up.

Selling something, and offering to do something

For sale is for a thing you want money for. It has to carry a price, and a range or "or best offer" counts. Free to a neighbor is the same notice without the price.

Offering a service is for the work itself. A kid who mows lawns on Saturdays, somebody selling tamales this weekend, a neighbor who will watch a dog or haul something off. You do not need a business to post one, and if you do run one you can post it here too.

Both of those types ask how a neighbor should reach you. You can put your phone number on the notice, or your full address, or neither, and the answer applies to that one notice. It does not change anything else the site shows about you.

An offer of work asks one more thing: where the work happens. Either you go to them, like mowing a lawn, or they come to you, like picking up tamales.

That answer decides what the notice carries. If you are going to them, your address is nobody's business and the notice does not ask for it, but it does need a phone number, because that is the only way a neighbor can take you up on it. If they are coming to you, put your address on the notice or a number they can call first.

An offer of work stays up 30 days. If it is only good for one weekend, put a last day on it and it comes down the day after.

This is not Services. Services is a list of companies neighbors have actually hired, and every entry there is a receipt from the neighbor who paid the bill. A notice is you saying what you will do. Nobody has vouched for it.

Notices come down on their own

At the end of that run a notice drops off the board and moves into the archive. Nothing is deleted and you can search the archive.

Your first notice is read first

An admin reads your first notice before it goes on the board. After that yours go up the moment you post them.

The site already checked that you live here when you signed up, so this is a one-time read of something you wrote. Any notice that trips the word check still comes to an admin no matter who wrote it.

Photos

You can add up to three photos per notice. They are made smaller in your browser before they are sent.

Getting told about new notices

You can pick the types you want to hear about. An email goes out when a notice of that type goes on the board.

You can also get it as a notification on your phone. On an iPhone that works once you have added this site to your Home Screen: tap the share button in Safari, pick Add to Home Screen, then open it from there. Both controls are at the bottom of the board.

What does not belong here

Politics does not belong here, and neither do crime and suspicious-person posts or arguments that name a neighbor. See house rules.
